Introduction
With the increasing availability of cheap but good optical products, the amateur astronomer is now fortunate to be able to own a variety of equipment of fair quality at affordable prices. However, the buyer still has to exercise caution, and read reviews of specific items, as there are many lemons out there among budget equipment, whatever the country of manufacture
I recently looked through a Fujinon 10x70s at a very dark sky site, and was thoroughly impressed. I could see so much more in the Milky Way region near Sagittarius than with my Nikon 10x50s (Lookout Action IV model). I put this down more to the 100% extra aperture and larger exit pupils, than the better optics. But the Fujinon is a very heavy pair of binoculars (that gives what I call "binocular elbows" quite fast), and rather costly. I was therefore intrigued at the prospect of owing a 70mm pair of binoculars that cost 1/3 less than the already budget-priced Oberwerk 15x70s, yet is of relatively good quality mechanically and optically.
